Forest and mountain trails: Horseback riding tours in Bariloche, Patagonia

With the horses you ride deep in the forest and valleys between Andes mountain ranges enjoying the tranquillity of pure nature. The horses used for these tours are trained to ride on any type of terrain. The riding tours are guided by connoisseurs of the region called baqueanos. Horseback riding tours starting at the Hotel Tronador

a - Valley of the Vuriloches - The Three Lagoons
Duration: two hours.

It is a easy level circuit-like route along both margins of Upper Río Manso. The path crosses grassland clearings and ñire (high birtch) groves near two lagoons that make the home of countless birds. In December and January, horseriding take place among large extensions of lupin in full bloom.


b - Puente Colgante (Suspension bridge) - Lookout over the Cypress forest:
Duration: one hour.

This route, also a hiking trail, is a good option for those who prefer a short trip. From the lookout point, a portion of the Valley of the Vuriloches close to the Laguna de la Lechería can be viewed.


c - Los Pozones of Arroyo Claro:
Duration: one hour.

It is also a short trip. We call "Pozones" (pools) the spots in the stream where rock gorges form quiet places and small rapids, surrounded by coihue trees (evergreen birtches) and caña colihue. The route may be traveled as a circuiiting on the lakeshore and returning on the Laguna Callvú (also Laguna Azul- Blue Lagoon) trail..


d - Castillo Rojo Lookout:
Duration: three hours.

Heading to the "Pozones" and continuing towards Arroyo Casalata, the path joins the trail starting at the lake and leading to Castillo Rojo (Redcastle) The trail raises through a thick forest featuring stretches of steep incline. Being close to and above the lake, this is the lookout in the area offering the best view.

e - Laguna De Los Césares:
Duration: three hours.

This is another good option for those looking for pleasant horseriding and wanting to see this lagoon other than by foot.


Pampa Linda:
Duration: full day.

after a three-hour horseback ride along the Upper Río Manso and among meadows, ñire groves and thick forest of caña colihue, you arrive at Pampa Linda. As you approach your destination, you will enjoy the view of the imposing mount
Tronador.


f - Cóndores lookout point:
Duration: full day.

Great horseback riding experience to ride to this beautiful viewpoint of the mount Tronador. Located on the summint of De los Vientos mountain, offers a magnificent view to the Tronador glaciers, the mountain it is just next to the Tronador mountain.

Horseback riding tours starting at Pampa Linda, Tronador

Ventisquero Negro
From Pampa Linda, following the main road by trails bearing to the Tronador mountain after 8 kilometers ride, you will arrive to the Ventisquero Negro (Black glacier end). Leaving the margin of the Manso River we follow an old dry river way, to the south of the Manso River the trail will take us to the front moraine of the Ventisquero Negro, seeing it from 3 kilometers away it looks like a big hill that closes the site of small forests and pebble rocks. After the ascent of the front moraine, we have views to Ventisquero Negro and its south lagoon. This glacier is stretching back with the years is fed by the constants and thundering avalanches of ice that crumble from the Glacier Manso River about 700 meters fall from the upper mountain. This Glacier comes from the upper cap of the Tronador glacier. The ice, after falling and eroding the mountain accumulates at the end of the valley, giving origin to the Ventisquero Negro.

Volcanico mountain

We ride up mountain and the last stretch to the summit we continue on foot. This mountain has a privileged position from where you can get unforgettable panoramic views. From here you can appraised in all its magnificence Mont Tronador and three of its seven Glaciers, Osorno Volcano, Puntiagudo, Catedral granite spires, the lakes Hess and Fonck. From here it is possible to appreciate the different geological formations of the Andes range in a 360° view. A 45 minutes hike through sandy and rocky trails, is what demands to get to the top of the Volcanico mountain.
Duration: full day. 15 km of riding and trekking, 1000 Mts. above sea level height difference, 4 to 6 hours uphill, 3 -5 hours downhill.

Ilón lagoon (also call lagoon "la carne") and "mirada del doctor"
This is an easy full day horse ride which crosses the mountain range and gets to two beautiful spots long time ago admired by the settlers and first courageous travelers. This lagoon is the perfect setting for a love history. The Tronador reflected clearly in the water of the lagoon (even in moonlit nights), the granite yellow thin sand beach, and the solitude feeling are some of the reasons for such statement. The trails goes through lenga forest, mallines (marshes), bordering streams and rivers with some water crossings and light slopes.
Duration: full day. From Pampa Linda it is 3 to 5 hours ride.

Meiling mountain hut

At 18 km from Pampa Linda is the Meiling mountain hut by the glacier. There is a two hours horse ride through forest and then a one hour of hike on stone trail and snow. This is a full day excursion. The mountain hut has a privileged location to stop, relax and admire the fantastic rock, glacier and ice formations. If you would like more challenging activity you may opt from the mountain hut to do an ice assent to one of the three Tronador summits (Chilean, Argentine and International peak, 3478 m). The horse ride ascent to is extremely relaxed, journeying through leafy forest of centennial Coihues. As ascent uphill mont Tronador, you may appraise the forest transition from Coihues to Lengas trees, both trees are from the same family but the latter is more resistant to harsh climate conditions of height and snow. Riding along the impressive ice breaking of the Castaño Overo Glacier Overo and its waterfall of 500 meters of height its a wonderful setting.

Horseback riding to Mont Pontoneros
Enjoy wonderful views from an old mountain fold high plains, over Mt. Tronador, highest peak in the area with its 8 massive glaciers, over the Andes range and surrounding area lakes. This trail is steep, but anybody who feels comfortable on a horse can do it.

Horseback riding to the viewpoint of the Gutiérrez lake
Ascending by the "Jacuzzi" trail ( it goes near a waterfall with several ponds in between, like a Jacuzzi), reaching some rocks with amazing views to the Gutiérrez and Mascardi lakes and to the Continental divide water flows valley. You ride through coihue (nothofagus) cypress and lenga forest.
